One of the questions I have is: if the current school is in such shoddy shape and it will take 2-3 years to build the new school. how, in good conscience can the town leave the old school open for another few years? If it's that dire, then, kids should be placed in other schools for the next few school years. And if we accommodate that, do we really need a brand new school or can the other be renovated at less cost? Other questions: has anyone projected school enrollment for the next ten years? When my daughter was young, Westport was closing schools due to falling enrollments. When she entered kindergarten, her class was the biggest in years but somehow, they all got to go to kindergarten. I have many more questions about how this town is being run right now but that's for another column.
There are four other elementary schools in Westport: Coleytown, Kings Highway, Saugatuck and Greens Farm.
All good questions. Many of us believe the kids should have been moved out. But that was not an option that was considered. I do not know why.
The committee asserts that a new school is preferable to a renovation.
I agree they should be moving the kids. The construction zone is going to be unhealthy.
